Right but wrong

Over the last couple of days I've had a chance to watch 3:10 To Yuma with Christan Bale and Russell Crowe and Gone Baby Gone directed by Ben Affleck and an All-Star cast. Each movie completely different, one a brilliant western, one a very capable mystery piece. What both have in common is a captivating story and a last ten minutes thats leaves the viewer leaving with a sense of emotional confliction.

The movies end with the main character making a decision that is moral or ethically the right thing to do but creates a terrible reality. I suppose it is our human nature to shun from the right thing when we know that it carries consequences that are not beneficial to us, such as pain or guilt. If all moral and ethical decisions were free of negative consequence I am sure we would see more of them in this era. But the fact is that people will normally do what they think is best for them at that moment and live their life continuously for that. Aways pushing aside that sometimes the right thing to do is the hardest and most painful thing for us.

It's no surprise that individually these movies were considered some of the best of 2007.
