28 weeks later

28 Weeks Later is not so much a sequel to the original as a different look at the same repercussions. Overall I like the movie and where I thought they lagged in the first movie I feel they more than compensated for in the second.

The plot of the movie is as follows: 28 weeks after Britain's population is destroyed by a blood virus turning people into zombies, the original inhabitant, zombies included, have died from the infected or starvation. An international force led by the US Army has cleared a zone for people to come back. Another outbreak occurs and a sniper and doctor help lead a group to safety before a full on extermination by the military occurs. Amidst this plot is the story of a family who is brought together again and some may hold promise for a cure to the problem.

Robert Carlyle (Bond villian from The World is Not Enough, Eargon) who plays the conflicted (in more ways than one) father sure has aged from just a decade ago when he was in Trainspotting. Henry Perrineau (Lost, Oz) plays a helicopter pilot and I certainly do find everything he does to be top notch work. To get past these actors I must go to Imdb, out of curiosity, and the rest of the cast is mostly unknowns except for actor who plays 'Doyle' the sniper who interestingly enough played the antagonist sniper in the Collin Farrel/ Samuel L Jackson movie 'SWAT'.

I liked that Weeks strengthened the two weakest parts of Days, gun play and family bonds. I really felt the father/daughter relationship was contrived in Days and the military was represented more as bully's in camouflage rather than a true military presence. However Days is a very good movie.

If 28 Weeks Later came out on a good weekend, Spider Man 3 will most likely stay the box office winner but nothing this weekend is an obstacle. If it can sustain a good opening weekend and still be relevant next weekend when the next summer blockbuster comes to town (Shrek the Third) there must be an inevitable third movie. I hope they skip past the 28 Months later and go straight to 28 Years later. If Weeks and the fall release of Resident Evil Extinction are profitable then fans of this genre can look forward to more quality horror and less remakes like The Hills Have Eyes.
