What's playing the Week of January 18, 2008

A belated Happy New Year.

As in all things Mo, their is stability in viewing followed by rapid and immediate change. Such has been the case lately.

Thank God for DVR the cable company's version of Tivo. In a constant rotation has been Batman, The Batman, Superman, Justice League Unlimited and Legion of Superheroes. As you can see, Mighty Mo is very much into the super hero phase of his youth. Batman, Superman and John Jon'z being his favorites.

I bought a few animated DVD's over the last month for our Friday movie nights and my personal collection. They're at a level a bit higher than Disney and Pixar so its been interesting.

Superman Doomsday. I have the original comic book of this story arch which follows the death of Superman. Rated PG-13, there is not much that Mo couldn't watch but to actually see Superman die and the after effects to that is a bit much for a four year old to understand. This considering his interactions to Superman have been the placid action of Cartoon Network.

DragonLance: Dragons of the Autumn Twilight. Again something I have read, in fact many times. I really like this book the first of a trilogy. In fact I find the trilogy as compelling as Lord of the Rings. The back story is easier to understand and the band of characters more likealbe. The DragonLance chronicles have spawned well over fifty books but the first three are the best and the foundation stone for all others. The movie is a combination of 2-D and CGI with a bit of japanese anime thrown in. The voices are all well known, Kiefer Sutherland (24) and Lucy Lawless (Xena, Battlestar Galatica) as the most notable. Michael Rosenbaum (Lex Luthor on the current live action Superman series and voices Flash on the defunct JLU cartoon). The movies paces swiftly through the first book, maybe a bit too fast and there is license on the movie to bridge gaps in the story they could fit in. In all a watchable movie and hope the remaining three get made. After all Lord of The Rings started as a Rankin/Bass cartoon as well.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars volume 1. This is a great animated DVD if you watch the movies. Wow there is a lot of action, none of the cheesey Lucas dialog. This is to fill in some gaps between the movies, specifically the last big war of the Republic Jedis and Clone Troopers fighting Dooku and the separatists battle droid army. Mo who loves the six live movies was agog watching this animated version. I was too.

At least its not mind numbing like Pinky-Dinky-Doo and Oswald. I am just so over that now.
